Georgia’s education community is mourning the loss of Scott Sweeney, a respected public servant, education leader, and former Chairman of the Georgia State Board of Education, who passed away on Friday, July 10, 2026. His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, educators, and public officials who remember him as a dedicated advocate for students and a leader whose integrity and compassion shaped public education across the state.
Sweeney devoted more than 15 years to advancing educational opportunities throughout Georgia. His commitment to public service spanned local and statewide leadership roles, where he worked tirelessly to strengthen schools, support educators, and improve outcomes for students and families.
Before serving at the state level, Sweeney spent eight years as an elected member of the Cobb County Board of Education, holding leadership positions as both chairman and vice chairman. His work at the local level earned him a reputation as a thoughtful and collaborative leader focused on creating meaningful opportunities for students.
In April 2019, Governor Brian P. Kemp appointed Sweeney to the Georgia State Board of Education to represent the state’s 6th Congressional District. Following redistricting, he continued representing the 11th Congressional District. In January 2020, fellow board members elected him chairman, a position in which he guided the board through significant challenges facing Georgia’s education system.
During his tenure as chairman, Sweeney was recognized for his steady leadership, practical decision-making, and ability to foster collaboration among education leaders. Even after completing his term as chairman, he remained actively involved through the District Flexibility and Charter Schools Committee, where he continued working with local school systems to expand educational opportunities for students across Georgia.
His dedication to education continued in February 2025 when Governor Kemp appointed him to the State Charter Schools Commission of Georgia. There, Sweeney remained committed to supporting innovation and excellence in public education until his passing. Fellow commissioners and education officials remembered him as a tireless advocate for students whose professionalism, wisdom, and collaborative spirit earned widespread respect.
Outside of his public education roles, Sweeney served as a Senior Business Advisor at InPrime Legal and held leadership positions with organizations including the Georgia School Boards Association and the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. Throughout his career, he was recognized for providing thoughtful guidance, building strong partnerships, and contributing to the growth and success of the communities he served.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Scott Sweeney was cherished as a devoted husband, loving father, and loyal friend. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Sandy, and their two sons, Gabe and Jake. Family, friends, and colleagues have shared heartfelt condolences, remembering not only his leadership but also his kindness, generosity, and the meaningful relationships he cultivated throughout his life.
